Our Spinning Jenny
Spinning Jennies are multi-spindle fibre spinning machines, doing the work of a spinning wheel, but with more than one thread (or "end") of yarn at a time. Building on more than 250 years of operation and inspired by the legendary British original, my spinning jenny is equipped with eight spindles, just as James Hargreaves' early machines were.
Ever since word got out about Hargreaves' world-changing machine, spinning jennies were made to fit into Welsh cottages, Nottingham manufactories and the enormous cotton mills of Lancashire and the world beyond, to name but a few. Popular initially for it's technological cutting edge, the jenny deserves to be recognised today for its perfect suitability to 21st Century needs; its zero carbon footprint, ease of repair and role in maintaining traditional craft skills that would otherwise be lost forever.
The way in which those early machines acted upon the wool of Eighteenth Century sheep is exactly the same as the way mine acts upon the wool of their descendants. The result is the same:
